Learning Engagement Project
The learning engagement project was an individual semester-long project where students collaborated with a real-life client to design a learning engagement using the knowledge and skills they acquired from class.
For my learning engagement project, my client was Dr. Fatemeh Hosseini, Director of Engaged Scholarship and Pedagogy at the Center for Social Justice Research, Teaching, and Service, and Assistant Research Professor at Georgetown University. Professor Hosseini teaches UNXD-1130: Social Action, a 1-credit, virtual and asynchronous experiential learning course for undergraduate students involved in community-based work that same semester.
Client Requests
Professor Hosseini hoped to increase student engagement in the class, encourage students to reflect and take time for self-care, and potentially have them utilize the Maker Hub to create meaningful summative campaigns from their work throughout the semester.
Design Process
For my project, I used the Six Facets of Understanding framework to identify the learning outcomes for the course. I also used the WHERETO framework for instructional planning to map out key elements of the class and inform redesign decisions. Using these instructional design frameworks, and Kolb’s model for experiential learning and Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle, I transformed the reflection part of the course into an individualized reflection journal on Google Docs. Additionally, I added a culminating project to the course where students synthesize all their reflections from the semester into an imaginative and creative final project.
